The Devils won, 5-2, against the Hurricanes at Prudential Center in the first of four regular-season meetings between the clubs.  The Metropolitan Division rivals will face-off three more times during this season-series.  The play again, three days from tonight, Sunday, Feb. 18 at PNC Arena in Raleigh at 5PM. (also Mar. 2 @ CAR, Mar. 27 @ NJD).

It was a crucial game for the Metropolitan Division opponents as New Jersey led Carolina by just 1PT entering tonight’s contest.  With the win, the Devils are 28-20-8=66PTS, three points ahead of Carolina’s 27-21-9 (63PTS).  The two clubs were ranked in the first and second in the Eastern Conference’s wildcard positions entering the game.

Damon Severson scored his ninth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 with just 19 seconds remaining in the first period.  His nine goals extends his career-high for goals in a season (previously; 5G, 2013-14).  *Severson is ranked third (tie; Zach Werenski – CBJ) in even-strength goals among all NHL blueliners. *courtesy MSG Networks

Severson also added an assist on Nico Hischier’s  goal in the third period for his second multiple-point game of the season.

Stefan Noesen scored his sixth goal of the season at 6:48  of the second period to put New Jersey ahead, 2-1.  Noesen, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Monday, broke a 21-game, goal-drought with the marker (last goal; Dec. 18, 2017 vs. ANA). He added a second marker in the third period to give the Devils a three goal lead.  It is the second two goal game of his NHL career (2G, Dec. 18 v. ANA).

Travis Zajac and Miles Wood had the assists on Noesen’s tally.  Zajac tied Jay Pandolfo tonight for the sixth-most, games-played among skaters in franchise history tonight playing in his 819th match.  He is the longest-tenured Devil and has 3PTS over his last 2GP (Feb. 13-15).

The second-year-pro ranks second on the club in goals with 15 and only trails Taylor Hall (23G).

Kyle Palmieri scored his 14th of the season to give New Jersey a 3-2 lead at 17:28 of the second period.  The New Jersey-native has six goals in his last nine games. It was the GWG.

Nico Hischier scored his 11th goal of the season and added two assists for his third 3PT game of the season/career.

New Jersey was 3-1-0 in 2016-17 against Carolina. They are5-3-1 at Prudential Center and 11-6-1 overall against the Canes since the 2013-14 season.

Keith Kinkaid, who has a career-high 12 wins this season.  He is 12-7-2 this season in 22GP. He added his second career assist tonight, recording the helper on Hischier’s goal. Kinkaid stopped 27-29 shots for second consecutive win, Feb. 13-15
